METALLICA Frontman Talks About His Signature Set EMG Pickups - Part 2
June 10, 2011The second part of a new video interview with METALLICA frontman James Hetfield in which he talks about his new EMG signature set pickups can be viewed below.
Due in June, the JH Set is a totally new dimension for EMG, the design being driven solely with the input of James Hetfield. After playing the 81/60 EMG combo for many years now, James wanted something not only "new"-sounding, he wanted a set that also looked totally new. The neck pickup uses individual poles and bobbins with an enlarged core that gives it a more percussive attack, higher output and a fuller low-end response making it clean and fat and fast attacking. The bridge pickup uses the same larger/taller core coil but has steel pole pieces, again for a tighter more percussive attack with less mutual inductance for a cleaner low-end. It is based on the EMG 81 but brought to a whole new level. Both pickups feature an exclusive black nickel plated finish over stainless steel. The set comes complete with EMG's revolutionary solderless installation wiring components.
Hetfield is probably one of the most recognized figures in the world of rock and metal, being the co-founder, main songwriter, and vocalist/rhythm guitar player for METALLICA.
Hetfield has been a major endorser of ESP guitars since the 1980s, and is best known for playing custom-made Explorer-style guitars with the EMG-81 in the bridge and the EMG-60 in the neck. Hetfield's main guitar from the early days was a Gibson Flying V, used almost exclusively until about 1984 when he switched to the Gibson Explorer model.
